HUDDERSFIELD & DISTRICT HISTORY
HUDDERSFIELD
COLLEGE PRIZE MEDALS.
THE
WRITING PRIZE.
A silver pen was first given in 1841 through the
generosity of William Willans, the vice-President of the school.
He continued to present it down to 1856 when, becoming President,
he took other responsibilities and the pen was awarded by the new
vice-President, Thomas Mallinson. When Thomas Mallinson died in
1863 John W Willans, son of William, requested that he be allowed
to continue the prize.
The list of awards in 1874 gives " a silver or gold pen in
case" and there were slight variations over the ensuing
years.
